SAN DIEGO WEDDING LOCATIONS

San Diego, California is one of the most popular wedding destinations in the world... our beautiful seaside city welcomes over 36,000 wedding ceremonies each year!

I have lived in San Diego for over 20 years and am familiar with all of the most popular wedding locations in "America's Finest City". From the Cuvier Wedding Bowl in La Jolla and the Alcazar Garden in Balboa Park, to the beaches outside the historic Hotel del Coronado and the incredible views from Sunset Cliffs, I have married couples from Arizona, Utah, New York and New Mexico, and as far away as Germany and the UK.

Below are some of my favorite San Diego coastal locations and venues. I have no doubt that together we will find the most perfect setting for your wedding day!

I Have Performed Wedding Ceremonies at these venues:

CORONADO BEACH

Coronado Beach is a beautiful, large sandy beach situated in front of the historic Hotel del Coronado. It is separated into three zones... South Beach, Central Beach and North Beach. If you are considering a beach wedding with your toes in the sand, this is the perfect location. Permits are not required for groups under 25 people and setting up chairs, arch and decorations is just fine. If you are having a larger wedding (more than 25 people), you will need to obtain a permit by contacting the Park & Rec Department at (619) 522-7342 or visit www.coronado.ca.us. NOTE: You DO NOT have to go through the Hotel del Coronado to have your wedding on Coronado Beach.

CUVIER PARK

One of the most popular wedding spots in La Jolla, the Cuvier Wedding Bowl is located in Cuvier Street and Coast Blvd., right across the street from the Scripps Inn. This small, grassy park is set below the street level and offers awesome views of the Pacific Ocean. Note that this park books up quickly, especially on weekends during the summer months and they only issue one permit per day. We offer a variety of wedding packages for this location, but permits must be obtained by the couple. Call the City of San Diego Park & Rec Department at (619) 235-1169 or visit www.sandiego.gov for availability and permit information.

HARBOR ISLAND PARK

If you prefer a grassy park, then Harbor Island Park is the perfect choice for hosting your wedding. Located off Harbor Drive between Point Loma and downtown San Diego, this large park offers cool breezes, shady trees and incredible views of the harbor and the City of San Diego skyline. Ample parking and restrooms are available. Harbor Island Park is one of the "Parks of the Port" and no permit is required for groups under 25. If your group is over 25, a permit is required and can be obtained by calling (619) 686-6200 or by visiting www.portofsandiego.org.

BAYVIEW PARK

Located at the northern end of Coronado Island, this lovely, shaded park is a wonderful location for a wedding if your group is under 30 people. Set off the street, this small, grassy park offers not only privacy, but a stunning view of the City of San Diego skyline comparable to that of Centennial Park... without the crowds. A permit is required at this location and the limit is 30 people. For larger groups, you may consider Centennial Park at First and Orange. Contact the Coronado Park & Recreation Dept. at (619) 522-7342 or visit www.coronado.ca.us for availability and permit information.

WINDANSEA BEACH – LA JOLLA

Windansea Beach is located in a residential area of La Jolla and is best known for incredible scenery with sandstone rocks that providing a beautiful backdrop for photos. For smaller groups, this beach is ideal and offers many lovely areas for your ceremony... and of course, incredible sunsets. Due to the unpredictability of the tides in this area, we do not provide any setup of wedding chairs or decor at Windansea. This location requires a permit for any number of people. Call the City of San Diego Park & Rec Dept at (619) 235-1169 or visit www.sandiego.gov for permit information.

SUNSET CLIFFS

Offering magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean, this location is truly inspiring! Luscombs Point at Hill Street is best for larger weddings with chairs, arch, music, etc. Ladera Street is perfect for a smaller ceremony. It is important to note that the cliffs are all dirt... no sand or grass. Permits are required and can be obtained by calling the City of San Diego Park & Rec Dept. at (619) 235-1169 or visiting www.sandiego.gov. Note: The cliffs can be quite unforgiving...if you are expecting small children, the beaches and parks are a lot safer for the little ones.

SCRIPPS COASTAL RESERVE

Located in the La Jolla Farms area and commanding a view for 30 miles, the precipitous upland portion of the reserve is topped by a grassy knoll and bounded by steep coastal canyons. Parking in the immediate area is limited since it is located in a residential area, but there is plenty of parking on La Jolla Shores Drive which is just a short walk away. This is a wonderful, very private location perfect for an elopement or very small group, but It is about a 1/4 mile walk on a dirt trail from the reserve entrance to the cliffs... an important consideration if you have elderly guests.

TORREY PINES STATE RESERVE

The Torrey Pines State Reserve is located between La Jolla and Del Mar. is the home of our nation's rarest pine tree – Pinus torreyana also known as the Torrey Pine. There are several lovely locations in the preserve for a wedding ceremony. The Guy Fleming Trail view deck pictured to the left, is a particularly beautiful spot and offers a magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean. You must obtain a special event permit to have a wedding of any size in the reserve ($350), or risk getting a ticket. Contact Debbie Valdez at (619) 688-3385 for more information.

PACIFIC BEACH / MISSION BEACH / OCEAN BEACH

The most open portion of Pacific Beach is north of Crystal Pier and extends over one mile. Two miles south of the Pier, Pacific Beach becomes Mission Beach which is the center of a continuous stretch of beach known as The Strand. Ocean Beach is located across the channel at South Mission Beach. Permits are required for these beaches but are only issued after before Memorial Day and after Labor Day . Call the San Diego Park & Rec Department at (619) 235-1169 or visit www.sandiego.gov for permit information.

NORTH COUNTY BEACHES

There are many lovely beach and cliff locations along Coast Route 101 that runs from Del Mar all the way to Oceanside. Some of my favorite North County coastal beaches include Tamarack State Beach in Carlsbad, Moonlight State Beach in Encinitas and Fletcher Cove Beach Park in Solana Beach. If you are in town prior to your wedding, take a drive along our beautiful coastline and you will be sure to find the perfect place... or visit www.a-zsandiegobeaches.com and click on the "North County" link to the left for a virtual tour of our North County coastal areas.

MORE BEAUTIFUL SAN DIEGO WEDDING LOCATIONS...

Below are some higher-profile, popular outdoor locations If you are having a large wedding on a Saturday or Sunday, during the height of wedding season, a reservation/payment of a fee is required and definitely recommended. You can check availability of these locations by clicking on the "availability" box on their respective websites.

Balboa Park is now issuing permits for these locations:

A WORD ON SAN DIEGO COUNTY PERMITS & RESERVATIONS...

There are a number of separate cities located within San Diego County (Coronado, San Diego, La Jolla, Del Mar, Encinitas, etc.) and each city has different rules for beach and park weddings.

If your guest list is under 25 people, and chairs, arch and decorations are what you have in mind, then you should have your ceremony at the beach in Coronado (no permit is required for groups under 25 and any set up is just fine.) They are very easy-going about having weddings on the sand there and welcome all couples with open arms.

In the City of San Diego, there are a number of beaches and parks that area available for weddings. The more popular, high-profile wedding locations require reservations and permits. The Cuvier Wedding Bowl and Calumet Park in La Jolla, for instance, are booked almost a year in advance and require a use permit and payment of a permit fee, as do the beautiful gardens in Balboa Park. If you are having a wedding at any of these locations on a Saturday or Sunday during the height of wedding season (May through August) reservations are strongly suggested and required, and must usually be made well in advance.

The most well known beach areas in San Diego proper are Windansea Beach in La Jolla, and Mission and Pacific Beach and technically, permits are required for these locations for any size group. Permits for Windansea Beach are issued at any time of year. Permits for Mission Beach and Pacific Beach are only issued before Memorial Day and after Labor Day weekend. The City of San Diego Park & Rec Dept. will not issue permits for beach weddings at Mission Beach or Pacific Beach during the summer season.

For more information on permits, visit the City of San Diego General Use Park Permit page or all the City of San Diego Park & Rec Department at (619) 235-1169 for more information. Permit fees vary ($250 - $500) depending on the location and where you live in San Diego.
